“Becoming one through music.” People from different cultures share a stage, listen to one another, and gather into a single sound. That moment has often been presented as an ideal of music. We have no wish to reject unity or harmony. But is this the only fulfillment of playing together? Has music failed if differences remain? This book begins with that question. “Music that does not become one” neither celebrates fragmentation nor advocates indifference. It means listening without drawing the other into our own music, without being absorbed ourselves, and remaining in the same place while remaining different. It is a phrase through which to explore that possibility in the practice of improvisation. Free jazz and free improvisation liberated music from established forms, harmony, and meter, bringing the performing body to the fore. Yet even music in search of freedom develops its own vocabulary and criteria when its practices are repeated. Once “good interplay” and “the sound of free improvisation” emerge, freedom becomes a matter of questioning what we follow, rather than simply removing constraints.
